Startup India Registration (DPIIT Recognition)
Startup India is a flagship initiative of the Government of India launched to build a robust startup ecosystem. By obtaining DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) recognition, eligible startups can access a range of benefits including tax exemptions under Section 80-IAC, fast-tracked patent examination, self-certification under labour and environmental laws, easier public procurement norms, and access to Fund of Funds.
Key Highlights
Available for entities incorporated as Private Limited Company, LLP, or Partnership Firm
Entity must be less than 10 years old from date of incorporation(20 years for Deep tech startups)
Annual turnover must not have exceeded ₹200 crore in any financial year
Must be working towards innovation, development, or improvement of products/services
Not formed by splitting or restructuring of an existing business
3-year tax exemption (out of first 10 years) under Section 80-IAC
Exemption from Angel Tax under Section 56(2)(viib)
Self-certification under 9 labour and 3 environmental laws
Documents Required
- Certificate of Incorporation / Registration Certificate
- PAN of the entity
- Description of innovation or scalable business model
- Proof of concept, prototype, or revenue generation details
- Recommendation letter from an incubator / DPIIT-recognized body (if applicable)
- Organisation DSC
Process
Step 1: Apply for Organisation DSC
Step 2: Register your entity on the Startup India portal (startupindia.gov.in)
Step 3: Fill in details about the entity, founders, and nature of business
Step 4: Upload supporting documents and a brief description of innovation
Step 5: Submit the application for DPIIT recognition
Step 6: Receive the DPIIT Recognition Certificate
Step 7: Apply separately for tax exemption under Section 80-IAC (optional)
